Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the situation of isolation among the elderly and prevent ¡°Godoksa,¡± which means lonely death. To achieve the research purpose, data from the 2021 Daejeon social survey were used. The subjects were elderly people living alone divided into two groups: those at high risk and non-risk of Godoksa. Furthermore, elderly at high risk compared by age groups. To understand the lonely life situations that cause Godoksa, this study compared housing and financial status, mental health, and personal and social relationships between the groups. Using the STATA 14 program, frequency, chi-square, and t-test analyses were conducted. The findings indicated that the group at a high risk of Godoksa was in a worse condition than the other group with poor housing and unsatisfying lives, experiencing difficulties in making a living, lack communication with families and other generations, and not participating in community meetings. Among elderly at high risk of Godoksa, younger group was more dangerous. To solve these problems, not only is a comprehensive response for the elderly living alone, but also concentrated efforts for those at high risk of Godoksa are necessary. Specifically, housing stability that will foster social relationships, the placement of related experts at regional hubs, and human resources in the form of neighbors should be provided.
